Hace casi un año, el 23 de enero de 2012, ABC publicó que a Hugo Chávez le quedadan alrededor de doce meses de vida, de acuerdo con informes confidenciales de sus médicos, si insistía en rehusar el tratamiento adecuado que le obligaría a dejar temporalmente sus funciones presidenciales. La exclusiva volvía a poner el cáncer de Chávez en la agenda informativa, después de que él mismo dijera estar recuperado de las operaciones realizadas en Cuba en junio de 2011, algo que su actividad en los últimos meses de ese año parecía avalar. Durante esos meses, ABC comenzó a tener acceso material a informes manejados por canales de inteligencia elaborados a partir de dictámenes de los médicos.
Determinada con el tiempo la solidez de las fuentes, tras semanas examinando cómo ciertos hechos confirmaban informaciones previas facilitadas por el mismo canal, ABC publicó la más completa versión hasta entonces sobre la evolución de la enfermedad del presidente. A pesar de la operación por cáncer en la próstata, Chávez seguía sufriendo metástasis en colon, huesos y médula.
Por más que el chavismo negó esas noticias sobre la salud de su comandante, éste tuvo que anunciar a finales de febrero que iba a ser sometido a una tercera operación por tumor en zona pélvica. Pasada la cirugía, y de nuevo en medio de la negación oficial sobre la continuidad de los problemas de salud, este diario publicó una nueva información en junio, indicando que el rabdomiosarcoma del presidente seguía extendiendo la tumoración en los huesos. Se decía que, entre otros medicamentos, para afrontar los dolores y poder mantener la actividad electoral que esta llevando a cabo Chávez tomaba fentanilo, cien veces más potente que la morfina. Solo altas dosis de opiáceos y esteroides explican que Chávez pudiera alcanzar la fecha de las presidenciales, el 7 de octubre.
ABC publicó otra exclusiva el pasado 29 de noviembre al anunciar que a Chávez se le había reproducido el cáncer en la misma zona donde ya había sido operado previamente. Así fue confirmado días después por el propio Chávez, en su última aparición pública antes de ser intervenido por cuarta vez en Cuba, el 11 de diciembre.
Vómito de sangre y traqueotomía
Este diario aportaría más datos, como un previo vómito de sangre y dolores en el abdomen que daban cuenta de la gravedad de la situación, así como la realización de una traqueotomía en el postoperatorio debido a complicaciones.
Aunque el Gobierno se refirió pronto a una infección respiratoria, solo esta semana ha admitido una «severa infección pulmonar». Sigue, no obstante, sin reconocer la extensión del cáncer en huesos y médula, así como el hallazgo de células cancerígenas en la pared interna del abdomen y la vejiga.
